The Security Council is one of the six firstly founded main UN organs, which gives primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. UNSC would meet whenever peace is threatened, addressing issues that include civil wars, natural disasters, arms control, and terrorism.
It is the principal UN crisis-management body and it is empowered to impose binding obligations on the UN member states to maintain international harmony.
Most of us may have heard of five permanent members of the UN in the past. It is mentioning the UNSC which is composed of the FIVE permanent members and TEN non-permanent members, 15 members in total. China, France, Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom are the permanent members and non-permanent members are elected for two-year terms by the UN General Assembly.
UNSC has an abundance of functions and obligations. They are maintaining international peace, investigating international friction leading disputes, formulating plans for the establishment of a system to regulate armaments, taking military action against an aggressor, taking military action against an aggressor and so on.
The differences between the General Assembly and UNSC are that the UNSC is more concerned with concrete threats to security including ongoing conflicts, whereas the General Assembly aims to create peace by forming habits and means of cooperation, meanwhile the General Assembly considers matters of international security only when the issue is not under the consideration of the Security Council.
