"I have been shocked to my core these past few days by the level of pain and suffering we see so many Somalis enduring," Martin Gritthins said. "Famine is at the door and today we are sending the final warning." He emphasized that the current situation and trends are similar to those before the famine in Somalia in 2010-2011, if not worse.
Last month, the World Food Programme of the United Nations issued a warning that 22 million people in Somalia were now at risk of famine. Additionally, the possibility of "severe hunger leading to mass mortality" in this area is increasing.
