In MUN, there are two kinds of caucuses - moderated caucus and unmoderated caucus- which are motions that could be raised by delegates to go for debates in two different forms.
Moderated Caucus:
In a moderated caucus, the Chair will temporarily depart from the Speakers List and call on delegates to speak at his or her discretion. A motion for a moderated caucus is in order at any time when the floor is open, prior to closure of debate. Once raised, the motion will be voted on immediately, with a simple majority of members required for passage. The delegate making the motion must briefly explain its purpose and specify a time limit for the caucus and a time limit for the individual speeches. For example, in the main topic of mental illness, you may raise a moderated caucus with the topic of “Mass media impacts on mental health” to narrow down to a more specific debate.
Unmoderated Caucus:
A delegate can always raise a motion for unmoderated caucus with a specific time whenever the floor is open within the debate. Once raised, the motion will be voted on immediately, with a simple majority of members required for passage. During an unmoderated caucus, delegates are free to move around for lobbying and writing resolutions. It is a time for you to find a group to work with and contribute your innovative ideas!
